Asian Beef Tenderloin

With Tempura Onions And Gyoza Sauce

This is the recipe for my first ever video recipe. Asian Beef Tenderloin With Tempura Onions And Gyoza Sauce, it's elegant, yet easy. And boy does it taste good too. The beef nearly melts in your mouth, and the tartness from the sauce makes it sing. The Tempura Onions are a nice crunchy offset to the tender beef. All in all a very successful meal. You need to try it yourself. Video equipment and crew not required.

Asian Beef Tenderloin

Serves: 2       Total Time: 30 Minutes


  • 2 beef tenderloin steaks 
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. ginger

Onion Tempura

  • 1 large sweet onion, cut into  1/4 inch rings
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup ice water
  • 1 cup flour
  • salt to taste

Gyoza Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tsp. rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp. sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger powder
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tbsp. chopped green onion


Step 1
Oil your grids and preheat your grill to 500°F and prepare for direct grilling. Place the cast iron skillet over direct heat. Pour enough oil into the skillet to fill it over half way.
Step 2
Combine the salt, pepper, and ginger. Season the tenderloin on all sides.
Step 3
Whisk the egg and add 1 cup of ice water. Stir in the flour, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Be careful not to over mix, just combined and still a little lumpy is good.
Step 4
Place the tenderloin on the grill over direct heat. Dip the onion slices into the batter and slide them carefully into the heated oil. Fry the onions for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden and crispy.
Step 5
While the onions are cooking, grill the steak for 5 minutes per side, or until your desired doneness has been reached. Medium - medium rare is good. Relax your hand and then touch the tip of your thumb to the tip of your middle finger. Touch the pad of your thumb with your other hand. That is what a perfectly cooked steak feels like. Touch your steak in the middle of the top and if it feels the same, it's time to come off the grill.
Step 6
When the onions are done, remove them to a paper towel and salt immediately to taste.
Step 7
Rest your steak for at least 5 minutes, up to 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

I can't wait to make Asian Beef Tenderloin With Tempura Onions And Gyoza Sauce again. We were seriously sitting there eating this with our fingers as soon as the photos and video were finished being shot. Imagine people sitting around a picnic table, eating delicious beef and sauce, with crispy onion rings, the juices running down our chins and fingers. It was a good day.
