This is actually one of the Baron of Baking's favourite recipes. I converted this from an old slow cooker recipe that my mother made when I was a kid, just like my other favourite that I converted for the Blog, Mushroom Chicken. What is your favourite childhood recipe? Have you kept making it and made it your own? Tell us about your recipes below in the comments.

Soy & Sake Pork Roast

Serves: 4       Total Time: 50 + marinade time

Ingredients

  • 1 bone in pork roast, at least 3 bones
  • ½ cup of soy sauce
  • ½ cup sake - rice wine, a dry and unsweetened white will do in a pinch
  • ¼ cup of oil
  • 3 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 1 ½-inch knob of fresh ginger, grated, or ½ tsp. of powdered
  • 4 tbsp. of honey
Sweet Potatoes
  • 2 sweet potatoes, scrubbed and peeled, sliced into ¼-inch thick rounds
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Step 1
In a non-reactive container, combine the soy sauce, sake, oil, garlic and ginger. Place the roast in and seal the container either with a lid or some plastic wrap. Marinate in the refrigerator from 4 hours to overnight.
Step 2
When you are ready to grill, oil your grids and preheat your grill to 450°F.
Step 3
Prepare your sweet potatoes by tossing the sliced potatoes with the oil, garlic, onion and salt.
Step 4
Remove the pork from the marinade, keeping the marinade. Sear the pork roast on all sides, and grill sweet potatoes over direct heat until grill marks appear.
Step 5
While the roast and potatoes are searing, pour the leftover marinade into a saucepan and heat over medium-high heat until it begins to boil. Reduce the sauce to a simmer and add 1 tbsp. of honey. Allow it to simmer steadily for at least 15 minutes.
Step 6
When the roast has seared on all sides, turn off one side of the grill so that the potatoes and the roast are both cooking over indirect heat. Grill for another 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are cooked through and a meat thermometer reads 165°F.
Step 7
Remove the pork from the grill and slice between each of the bones for serving. Serve with grilled sweet potatoes, seasonal vegetables and some of the sauce on top. Or over a bed of rice.
This Soy And Sake Pork Roast With Grilled Sweet Potato Medallions is a taste of lovely roast pork, marinated and grilled to produce a lovely Asian-inspired flavour. The rice wine, known as sake, is a staple for my pantry and goes beautifully in many sauces where wine is often used. Don't worry I didn't forget the garlic either, or the ginger. I used honey to give the roast a lovely caramelized crust when finishing it up too. Served on a bed of rice, or with the sweet potato medallions and some seasonal vegetables, this meal is a great way to please everyone.
